2.3 Ecosystem functioning and climate change

I am also interested in understanding and forecasting the impacts of on-going global change on community dynamics and functioning in Mediterranean ecosystems.

Particularly, I am carrying out an experimental, trait-based study to analyse the impact of two different sources of stress (abiotic and biotic) on functioning of mediterranean savannah-like ecosystems (dehesa systems) via changes in the functional structure and diversity of plant and microorganism communities (DECAFUN project).  These agroforestry ecosystems cover vast areas of the Earth´s surface and provide a range of relevant ecosystem services. However, their sustainibility and persistence at the long term have been seriously questioned in the last decades due to the joint and interactive effects of two of the most relevant components of global change: climate and land-use (over-grazing) changes.
